Ancient GreeceGreece is a country by the Agean Sea. It is made up of the mainland & 400 islands, the largest being Crete. In ancient times Greece was not a single country as it is today. Greece was a collection of city-states. Each city-state was made up of a city surrounded by the countryside. Each city-state was independent and ruled by a small group of powerful men. These men were part of a council elected by the citizens of the city-state & were entrusted to make the laws for the city-state.
Although all the city-states shared the same language, wordshipped the same gods & goddesses, told the same stories, ate the same foods, fought the same enemies & shared many other cultural aspects, the belief of how a city-state they should be goverened varied. The two most powerful city-states were Athens & Greece & these two city-states could not have been more different places to live. Our world today is surrounded by things that find their basis in the ancient culture of the Greeks. Sports:
